Last year, fewer patents were registered with the German Patent and Trademark Office compared to 2018. With 67,437 filings, the number is 0.7% lower than in 2018, the office announced in Munich on Friday.

Most patent applications, 4202, came from Bosch, followed by Schaeffler with 2385 and BMW with 1773 applications. Overall, the automotive industry dominated in 2019: for the first time, all the companies represented in the top ten of patent applications are operating in the automotive sector.

In a comparison of the German states, Baden-Württemberg replaced Bavaria (14,064 applications) at the top with 15,230 patent applications. Third place went to North Rhine-Westphalia with 7022.
