The European Commission (EC) has launched a public consultation on the EU Geographical Indication (GI) scheme. The purpose of the consultation is to seek views on the main challenges identified that would need to be addressed in the planned review, as well as their underlying causes. Contributions aim to provide a range of policy options, that could be considered to address these challenges and the impacts arising from these different options.
In Europe, almost 3400 products are protected under one of its quality schemes: GI, Protected Designations of Origin (PDO), Protected Geographical Indications (PGI) and Traditional Speciality Guaranteed (TSG).
The EC invites all EU citizens and organisations as well as national and regional authorities to contribute to the assessment of how to strengthen the GI system. The questionnaire is available in all EU languages and can be accessed until 9 April 2021 via the European Commission's dedicated website.
